Ghazi Barotha Taraqiati Idara (GBTI)

Operations commenced in late 1995, and areas of operation include NWFP and Punjab.

Ghazi Barotha Taraqiati Idara (GBTI) was created in 1995, as a support organization for the Ghazi Barotha Hydropower Project Affectees to resolve issues pertaining to land compensation and resettlement. The Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) based on its experience of working with affectees of the Tarbella Dam, conceived GBTI as an independent non-government organization that could both project the national significance of WAPDA's role in the GBHP and at the same time champion the cause of the project area residents so that they deem themselves to be the clear beneficiaries rather than the affectees of the GBHP. GBTI has been established by the National Rural Support Programme (NRSP) with endowment provided by WAPDA (Water and Power Development Authority) at the behest of the World Bank. The project covers 18 Union Councils, primarily in the districts of Swabi, Haripur, and Attack.

GBTI's efforts for effectively executing its mandate have been a unique learning experience. From circumspectly working on specific project objectives, GBTI began to focus on poverty alleviation and reorganizing the communities around holistic development objectives, beginning in 2000/2001. GBTI works without a preconceived package and instead tries to assist the communities draw up their own priorities for implementation on a self-help basis with GBTI acting as a catalyst to provide guidance, linkages, mechanisms for overcoming obstacles that prevented work being undertaken in the past by the community.

Funding Arrangement

GBTI has been working with the financial support of WAPDA, Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund (PPAF) and the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA).
