In 2000, The South Asia Poverty Alleviation Programme (SAPAP), which was established in 1997 in the North West Frontier Province (NWFP) made the transition into the Lachi Poverty Reduction Project co-financed by the UNDP, Islamabad and DFID. The project continues to operate in the Tehsil Lachi of District Kohat in the NWFP.
Lachi Poverty Reduction Project (LPRP) is being implemented by the implemented by the Sarhad Rural Support Programme (SRSP). While following the rural support programme model, as a research and development project LPRP is focusing on: Union Council wise comprehensive household coverage, development of natural resource management arid zone replicable model, Union Council based self-sustaining micro-credit model, and pro-active linkages towards facilitating communities participation in the government's devolution Plan 2000. The project aims to improve the livelihoods of 100,000 people living in Lachi, Kohat and envisages scaling up the scope of initial activities to the remaining eight union councils of Lachi Tehsil.

The project is being financed by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
