Sarhad Rural Support Programme (SRSP)

Commenced operations in fall 1989 and work is confined to the North West Frontier Province (NWFP).

SRSP faces many challenges in mobilizing people. The diversity of the physical landscape, with difficult terrain and long distances pose a major challenge to social mobilization strategy of the SRSP. Conflicting perspectives of the progressive and the conservative elements within a village require extraordinary skills of social organizers in mobilizing the community. Nevertheless, the newly introduced devolution of government at the district level provides many exciting multidimensional opportunities for SRSP to partner with the government for improving the livelihoods of the poor, in particular the women, and for building the capacity of the newly elected public representatives at the district level.

SRSP's major programme components include microfinance and promotion of small enterprise, capacity building and skills development particularly in the domain of natural resource management, human resource development, physical infrastructure development and social sector programmes in the areas of education, health and gender equality. SRSP is expanding its interventions in the education sector with the assistance of the Education Sector Reforms Assistance Programme (ESRA), a USAID sponsored initiative. Equally, SRSP has been able to strengthen its institutional capacity with the support of DFID's two-year Capacity Building Project.

Funding Arrangements

Currently, SRSP is being funded by the Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund, Netherlands Organization for International Development Cooperation, Royal Netherlands Embassy, Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, Interco-operation, and Trust for Voluntary Organization.
