EMERGENCY FLOOD APPEAL
SUPPORT TO FAMILIES AFFECTED BY THE CATASTOPHIC
FLOODS IN PAKISTAN
After a year wrought with conflict which led to the displacement of approximately 2.2 million people, Pakistan has now been hit with the worst floods in 50 years. The unprecedented flooding has been caused by very heavy Monsoon rains, and has affected all parts of the country. With the death toll rising everyday it has not been possible to get an accurate estimate of the individuals affected by the floods but conservative estimates put the number at 800,000 in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa alone, with over 1,500 deaths.
The floods have destroyed homes, inundated crops, killed livestock, washed away communication links and led to a scare of a health catastrophe. With further rains forecasted for the coming weeks, the dams full to capacity and the relief agencies stretched to their limits it is time for Pakistanis and for our friends all over the world to help these people – who have been the continuous victims of strife and hardship.
WHAT IS RSPN?
The Rural Support Programmes Network (RSPN) is a national, Pakistani organisation and the largest non-government network of rural development programmes in the country, called Rural Support Programmes or RSPs. The RSPs mobilise rural women and men on a self help basis to undertake activities in areas of relief and rehabilitation, community built infrastructure, community financing (micro credit and health insurance), building employable skills, agriculture, livestock, small enterprise and other sectors. The RSPs work in 105 districts of the country’s 138 districts and have mobilized over 3.3 rural households.
RSPN is registered as a non profit company under Pakistan’s Companies’ Ordinance, 1984. It is audited annually by KPMG. RSPN has ten member Rural Support Programme partners, all of which are working with their respective affected communities. Please see RSPN website for further details: www.rspn.org
RSPN’s partners have worked extensively in disaster relief efforts in Pakistan, including the 2005 Earthquake, the Baluchistan and Sindh Floods of 2007, the Baluchistan Earthquake and the 2009 IDP crisis in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The RSPs are currently involved in assisting effected families. RSPN is collecting donations (in cash and kind) for affected families. Your donations will be provided to affected families through the on-ground network of Rural Support Programmes.
