EMERGENCY FLOOD APPEAL
SUPPORT TO FAMILIES AFFECTED BY THE CATASTOPHIC FLOODS IN PAKISTAN
After a year of devastating floods across the country which affected over 20 million people and left approximately 800,000 without shelter, Pakistan has now been hit with more catastrophic flooding in province of Sindh. With the death toll rising every day, an estimated 9 million individuals have been affected, out of which close to 2 million have been left homeless.
The floods have destroyed homes, inundated crops, killed livestock, washed away communication links and led to a scare of a dengue outbreak. With relief agencies stretched to their limits it is time for Pakistanis and for our friends all over the world to help these people – who have been the continuous victims of strife and hardship.
WHAT IS RSPN?
The Rural Support Programmes Network (RSPN) is a national, Pakistani organisation and the largest non-government network of rural development programmes in the country, called Rural Support Programmes or RSPs. The RSPs mobilise rural women and men on a self help basis to undertake activities in areas of relief and rehabilitation, community built infrastructure, community financing (micro credit and health insurance), building employable skills, agriculture, livestock, small enterprise and other sectors. The RSPs work in 105 districts of the country’s 138 districts and have mobilized over 3 million rural households.
RSPN is registered as a non profit company under Pakistan’s Companies’ Ordinance, 1984. It is audited annually by KPMG. RSPN has ten member Rural Support Programme partners, all of which are working with their respective affected communities. Please see the RSPN website for further details: www.rspn.org
RSPN’s partners have worked extensively in disaster relief efforts in Pakistan, including the 2005 Earthquake, the Baluchistan and Sindh Floods of 2007, the Baluchistan Earthquake, the 2009 IDP crisis in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province and the 2010 floods across the country. The RSPs are currently involved in assisting effected families. RSPN is collecting donations (in cash and kind) for affected families. Your donations will be provided to affected families through the on-ground network of Rural Support Programmes.
HOW YOUR CONTRIBUTION IS UTILISED
Your contribution will go towards helping affected families in the least serviced and worst affected communities across Sindh. All implementation of relief actives is carried out by RSPN’s 3 partner Rural Support Programmes bases across Sindh in all 21 Districts flood affected districts. The RSPN, through its partner RSPs provide relief in the form of food kits, hygine kits, non-food item kits, medical assistance, WASH services, livestock care and emergency shelter with a specific focus on providing emergency relief to women and children.
The funds are only used for relief activities and no operation costs are charged on donation.
Distribution process is as follows. Our district offices have carried out damage assessment in all affected districts, which they update regularly. Once they have identified the most vulnerable families they register them, taking down their name and other family statistics. Once the registration is complete families are handed a token and are informed about the location and date of distribution. Our district level staff then distributes the relief items on the date specified and keeps a record of all beneficiaries
